Most advanced materials don't fail in the lab. They fail in the gap between research and manufacturing.

Most advanced materials don't fail in the lab.

They fail in the gap between research and manufacturing.

Moving from making grams to tonnes introduces a completely different set of challenges.

  • Can the process be repeated consistently and quality maintained?
  • Can the material be produced economically?
  • What technical and economic advantages does the new material deliver?
  • Is it enough?

These questions are often where commercialisation succeeds or fails.

At Lava Blue, a significant part of our work sits in that space between scientific discovery and industrial deployment. And we have been doing this every day for the past three years at our Centre for Predictive Research into Speciality Materials (PRiSM) in Southeast Queensland.

Innovation is vital. Successfully scaling up production, while maintaining quality and controlling costs is what makes it commercial.
